How to make a waspie corset pattern?

Simple! You take a corset pattern that you like and know fits you well. Then, you make it shorter. Much shorter. Like a lot more shorter but there is a catch. There is a limit to how tiny your waspie corset pattern can be before we can freely consider it to be a very fancy belt.

Ok, fine, you got me. There aren’t clear rules or definitions on what makes a corset a waspie corset or what exactly makes it different from an underbust corset. Or a fancy belt.

Generally, waspie is a very short underbust that keeps all elements of a functional corset. This is what separates it from a belt.
After this point, my personal opinion comes in to play with a bit of experience and a few failed experiments. A bit of pain too but more on that later.

As you will see in this tutorial on how to make a waspie corset pattern, I firmly believe that a waspie should not be shorter than your false ribs or your Iliac crest (high hip). Reason for this is simple. Steel is stronger than muscle, fat and skin but it meets a worthy foe when it hits your bones. Without the bone frame of your pelvic bone as well as the bottom of your rib cage, the corset is free to dig in to all of the squishy parts living inside your abdominal cavity.

A waspie that is too short can lead to discomfort or even pain. Nobody wants a corset that is uncomfortable by accident.

I’ve made this waspie corset pattern tutorial to prepare you for more complex pattern drafting, redrafting and cut manipulation I want to dive into in the future. So, this is an introduction to the waspie topic. A starting point that, I hope, will inspire you to play with your favorite patterns more.

Hope you find this tutorial helpful!

Happy sewing!

Method is demonstrated on a beginner friendly Overbust corset pattern DOLORES though the same principle can be applied to any other corset patterns.
